PART ONE: THE ARCHIVIST’S RECORD

Classification: Sealed. Civic. Disputed.
Every Decadal Alignment adds names to two walls.
Skyside’s, in gold, for who rose.
Shadowside’s, in weathered metal, for who did not come back from holding the sky together.
I have read the official record of every Decadal Alignment in this city’s history.
Forty cycles. Forty clean accounts of ceremony, vow, and aftermath.
One of them is not clean.
The maintenance logs from that cycle stop nineteen hours before the eclipse reached totality.
No failure recorded.
No anomaly logged.
Just silence. Then a resumption.
Then a casualty count that does not match the names later added to either wall.
[Archivist’s Footnote: Someone edited what happened that day. I do not yet know who, or why, or what they were trying to prevent the rest of us from finding. I know only that the official record wants you to believe nothing happened. The wall says otherwise.]

PART TWO: FROM R. R. PANWAR
Six days before the eclipse, Skyside is busy rehearsing vows.
Six days before the eclipse, Shadowside is running its final failure drills, stockpiling reserves nobody wants to use, and sending crews close to shielding that has never been tested this long.
One Shadowsider has already stopped asking how many more names the wall will get this year. He is already deciding whose names should be there.
That is where The Decadal Shift begins. Not with the ceremony. Definitely not with the wall. With the six days before it, when pressure that has been building for decades finally finds a place to go.
This is not abstract for him.
He has watched the wall fill year after year. Quiet additions. Weathered metal. No gold. No procession. No speeches that reach the upper decks.
Just another name in a corridor most of Skyside will never walk through. He knows what everyone in Shadowside knows. The city holds because people like him keep holding it.
The city has never asked what that costs. It only assumes the cost will be paid. Six days out, he has access nobody questions. Shadowside always has people near the shields before Alignment.
Six days out, he has a plan nobody has caught. Nobody upstairs is looking. Now the only question left is whether he goes through with it.
There is a line running through everything that follows:
Every piece in the system returns to its place.
Someone says it like comfort. By the end, it becomes something closer to a promise. And not a kind one.
